"My Shadow"

One of my favorite poems is called "My Shadow" by Robert Louis Stevenson.  I remember a little girl sitting with her "Pama" (Grandma), listening to her read this poem.  I can still hear her voice as she read to me, and I can still hear my own giggles of delight!

I have a little shadow that goes in and out with me,
And what can be the use of him is more than I can see.
He is very, very like me from the heels up to the head;
And I see him jump before me, when I jump into my bed.

The funniest thing about him is the way he likes to grow—
Not at all like proper children, which is always very slow;
For he sometimes shoots up taller like an India-rubber ball,
And he sometimes gets so little that there’s none of him at all.

He hasn’t got a notion of how children ought to play,
And can only make a fool of me in every sort of way.
He stays so close beside me, he’s a coward you can see;
I’d think shame to stick to nursie as that shadow sticks to me!

One morning, very early, before the sun was up,
I rose and found the shining dew on every buttercup;
But my lazy little shadow, like an arrant sleepy-head,
Had stayed at home behind me and was fast asleep in bed.

Now that I'm all grown up and have children of my own, I often think about this poem.  I took the liberty of changing the words to this favorite poem of mine.  You see, my children are like little shadows that go in and out with me...(Do you know how much fun cleaning a toilet can be?  If you don't think so (like me) - just ask my 5 year old who begged me this morning to let her clean the toilets!  Has a way of changing that "ho-hum" attitude, doesn't it?)

I have a little shadow that goes in and out with me,
And how God can use him someday, I can clearly see.
He is very, very like me from the heels up to the head;
And I see him play before me, as with the chores I try to keep ahead!

The funniest thing about him is the way he likes to grow –
Very much like proper children, which to a parent doesn’t see so slow;
For he sometimes acts more grown-up with his attitudes and all,
And he sometimes acts so sweet that I wish he’d stay so small!

He only has a notion of how children ought to play,
And can only make a teacher of me in every sort of way.
He stays so close beside me, he’s eager to learn you can see;
I’d think it wonderful if he sticks to God as that shadow sticks to me!

One morning, very early, before the sun was up,
I rose and found God’s shining dew on every verse looked up;
And my busy little shadow, like an energetic bumblebee,

Had crept up quietly behind me, waiting to sit upon my knee.

I am reminded of how shadows change and how fleeting they are....just like the time I have with my children.  Martha, Ian, and Phebe - my three little shadows!

Teaching and Training

"As the fining pot for silver, and the furnace for gold; so is a man to his praise." Proverbs 27:21

Yep, I'm still reading through Proverbs!  It's hard to believe January is almost gone!  I'm already pondering and asking the Lord which book to study next, but I believe this year I will read Proverbs with along with every other book I read this year.  When the new year began, I thought I'd try to read my Bible all the way through....now that the first month is almost gone, I'm thinking I'd be better equipped to teach and train if I just studied 12 books (one for every month) and Proverbs.  So that's my goal for this year.

Recently, a friend and I were sharing some of the challenges of raising our children for the Lord.  The Lord reminded me that I cannot stand still in the "Motherhood Department."  If I want my children to succeed for the Lord, I have to wisely teach them and train them.  One of the areas that I have noticed is most effective (at least with my kiddos) is PRAISE!!  My kids thrive on praise!  I was reminded of that when I read Proverbs 27:21 this morning.  Just as the refining process is for the good of the gold, praise is for the good of man (who doesn't like to be praised?).
I have noticed when I praise my children, they try even harder to do right.  When I nag at them.....well, they're like me - they just want to skate by - doing the minimum requirements!
Martha and Ian love to help wash the dishes, and when we're NOT in a hurry, we let them help!  Last night I had Martha set the table for supper (one of her normal responsibilities) and I noticed the silverware were out of place.  As I looked at the table, two thoughts came to my mind:  1.  Martha didn't do her job right!  2.  I have never taken the time to SHOW her the right way to set the silverware!  So, I took a few moments, showed her the proper way to set the silverware, then let her correct the other places settings...and I remembered to praise her for a job well done!
We are training our children to respond with "Yes/No, Ma'am/Sir" when spoken to.  Ian forgets many times (as does Martha), but I have noticed that when I praise him for remembering by himself to respond the proper way, the next time he is even faster to respond the right way!
How thankful I am in my own life for the God-given gift of PRAISE!!  What a blessing to have praise to use to help teach and train our children to serve the Lord!

"Stop Talking and Do What You're Told!"

McKendree Family 2012
"Stop talking and do what you're told."  How many times did I hear those words when I was a kid?  Now I'm a Mommy, and I hear myself saying those exact same words to my children!  When I'm talking to my Daddy, I will occasionally mention things that I have said or done exactly like he and my Mom did with me.  I wish you could hear the howl of laughter that comes from him right after I've shared one of those "moments" with him!

The other day, I found myself saying to Martha, "Stop talking and do what you're told!"  I must confess that there was just a slight edge of irritation in my voice.  She went and did what she had been told to do, and I went back to washing my dishes.  I was about half way back to the sink when the Holy Spirit smote my heart, and I heard Him saying those words to me!  I squirmed and started "talking back" to the Holy Spirit - trying hard to "help" Him see my side of the story!  Again I heard, "Stop talking and do what you're told!"  I immediately began thinking of things in my life that I have been "told" to do, and how many times I neglect to do them!  Ooooh!  How patient and loving the Holy Spirit is with us - isn't He?!

Isn't it funny (and convicting) how God uses our children to teach us more about our relationship with our Heavenly Father?  I sometimes think I learn more from my children, than they learn from me!  How precious those "learning moments" are to me!

So, like my children, I am (again) learning the lesson of "Stop talking and do what you're told!"  And, just like for my children, it is sometimes a hard lesson for me to remember and obey!  But praise the Lord, I have His patience and loving-kindness to help me as I learn these valuable lessons with my children!

Too Young?

I was convicted recently about something....something lacking in my son's life.  And (I hate to admit it!) it was my own words that the Holy Spirit used to convict me!
I had sent Martha to her room to have her quiet time.  She has a devotional book that she "reads" every morning.  It has a picture of a cat on the front, so she calls it her "Cat Book"!  Since we have made her a schedule, quiet time is part of her every day routine.  Yes, she is only 3 and not yet saved, but what better time to instill Godly habits into her life than now?
After I had helped Martha get settled for her quiet time, I spent the next few minutes explaining to Ian why Martha couldn't play right now.  And while I was explaining, the Holy Spirit started doing some explaining to me!  At first I protested - saying, "But Ian is too young!"  "Too young?" I heard the Holy Spirit say!  "Too young to start forming Godly habits - the same habits you are trying to teach his sister?  Why wait to start teaching him and training him?"  Have you ever "rolled your eyes" at the Holy Spirit?  Well, I did as I started to protest some more with my lame excuse "He'll never sit still!"  Will I never remember that the Holy Spirit knows all these things already?  So, the Holy Spirit once again reminded me that Ian is not to young to start learning to sit still and have quiet time.  So....I surrendered, took Ian to his room, got his "Bible" (Bible storybook) and got him settled on his bed with "Oof" and "Bear."
He didn't stay on his bed reading for very long, but it was a start!
Oh, the joy that the Holy Spirit filled my heart with as I saw my children learning the habit of quiet time with the Lord!
At this very moment, Ian is walking around the living room with my "clumpy shoes"!  What a reminder of how our children try to fill our shoes and walk in our footsteps!  It makes me take a moment to ask myself - "Where am I leading my children?"
Too Young?  Jesus didn't think so when he said, "...Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not:  for of such is the kingdom of God."  Not only did he allow the children to come unto Him, but the Bible also says in that same verse, "But Jesus called them unto him..."

Too Young?

Life on the Mission Field

I wanted to share some pictures with you of our life on the mission field.

It is always handy to have a "bird's eye view" of where you are staying!  This was in Iquitos.
This is what you do with your cereal bowl when you are done eating!  Keep in mind - this is IAN'S idea of what to do - not Mommy or Daddy's idea!  Thankfully there was no milk with his cereal!

Out of paper?  The lady I buy fruit from at the market has a simple solution - use the banana peel to add up your total - then give it to your customer!  I'll never worry about having notepaper again as long as I have bananas in the house!
Martha was signing along with me while I was signing a special.  I didn't notice her, but Daddy did!  I look forward to the day we can sign specials together!
As a Missionary Mom, it is always a joy and a blessing to see my children interacting with the people God has called us to reach!  Everyone here loves our children, they love them!  The Deaf, especially, love to see the children signing to them!
